LI: To understand how scientists know so much about dinosaurs. To recognise different types of fossils and how they are formed.
Our challenge was to create a Google Draw that shows clearly labelled examples of each fossil type. Something I found interesting was that I got to learn about Body fossils and Trace fossils , Body fossils are actual parts of the dinosaur and the trace fossils are the footprints or marks of the past life.
LI: To create a DLO that tells Mary Annings story from her perspective story.
Before we took part in our own dinosaur dig LS2 were challenged to capture the story behind Mary Anning, a pioneering fossil hunter and paleontologist during the early 19th century. Something I learnt was that Mary Anning was the first to complete the skeleton of an Plesiosaurus and an Ichthyosaurus , she was 23 years old when she discovered the Plesiosaurus and 12 years old for Ichthyosaurus.
This week for Inquiry , Mareta and I created a DLO about Mt Whakaari White Island. This task is telling everything about Mt Whakaari the size of it and when the volcano erupted. Mt Whakaari is privately owned and has been a scenic reserve since 1953 , The full Maori name is “Te puia o Whakaari” and the meaning of it’s name in English is “The Dramatic Volcano”. I really enjoyed this task because I get to work with a friend and I learnt new information about the Volcano. The sites that really helped was Wordhippo it helped me turn hard words in to words that kids our age understand.
For the Winter Learning Journey, Hasna and I created an infographic about the Kiribati and sharing our information about the island.
We shared out facts and ideas of the information we found about Kiribati , Did you know that Kiribati is located in the central pacific ocean and the lagoons are home to various Marines life including reefs sharks and rays. This island is well known as the country that seen the sunrise first and the island are scattered everywhere in the vast area and having island in all 4 hemispheres.
I really enjoyed this task because I got to learn new information about Kiribati Language Week and I really collaborated with my partner Hasna we had so much fun working together on this Activity Nine.
LS2 is learning about Cinquain poem using words that descirbe a object or a person. There are 4 verses and they are : Noun 1 , Adjective 2 , Verbs 3 , Phrase 4 and Synonym 1. The numbers on the side is telling us how many words there supposed to be to make a cinquain poem.

For this weeks learning our group was making a DLO of what we were learning about in maths. We were learning about the Lowest Common Multiple we were showing example and what strategy we used to figure out the answer of the equation we were working on. Eg: The lowest common multiple between 2 and 3 is 6 because 2 x 3 equals 6. Also some question for some viewers : List the next 3 multiples 5,10,15,_,_,_ List the next 5 multiples 7,14,21,28,_,_,_,_,_.
For Writing LS2 wrote a pourqoui story that is related to Maungarei. We learnt how to use puncuation and capital letter Skimming and scanning all the words we used all the time and go on wordhippo to find another word to put in our story. A pourqoui story is basically a story is telling you why or what it is about. We organize all of the words we wrote and make it into a whole story combining it together to create a perfect story. After we created the pourquoi we went straight to Adobe Express to created the image of a volcano.We copied and paste each paragraph from the story and put it into the (Describe what you like to see) box to generate a photo you want.
Many hundred of years ago in a country across the sea when dinosaurs roamed around free there lived Maungarei well known as the fire and angry mountain. She has always been angry and no one would mess with her, her rage took over her emotion but one day there were dinosaurs on her body. Waking her up from her sleep angry and bad tempered she exploded in fury when woken from her sleep. As her anger took over she rumbled sending the other mountains around , her running in all one direction being scared that Maungarei is getting angry they knew it was time to protect themselves before she was surrounded by a smoke screen of fury.
Once she turned the land to burn with anger ! Maungarei soon regretted her angry actions and realising how lonely she will become by being angry all the time, she cried with all her heart noticing if she thought about what she was doing she wouldn’t make everyone run away from her with fear in their eyes .
Maungarei always let her anger take over her other emotions. She was a powerful warrior, her emotions were fiery as a volcanic eruption bursting with anger. She wasn’t able to control her outburst surrounding her were her siblings who were always bugging her . She was known as the middle child. She never got the attention from anyone until she got angry and wondered.
After she realised how angry she got and scared every mountain and animals running away with distress in their eyes , looking at the mess she caused she felt lonely and regretted her terrible actions wished the the sun (Ra) to make her calm down and have a sleep for a little bit dreaming everyone will come back to her so she can treat them in a different way she treated them before. The next day she felt so drained she never felt that way before but she knew it was time to take a long rest to make sure she doesn’t damage anyone or anything anymore.
Maungarei is a volcano which is currently sleeping peacefully but it is all suddenly quiet now but everyday we would never know when Maungarei would rise again the answer is we would want to know if she is going to be known as the fiery mountain again or if she controlled her angry emotions and turned them into happiness and peace.
For inquiry we learned about volcanoes and what the different types are. What causes a volcanic eruption? The volcano erupts when 2 tectonic plates crash and touch each other that can make the magma rise to the Earth’s surface which can rise and flow out onto the flat surface of land (that can cause damage to buildings and people, etc…). While it’s erupting, the gas goes everywhere including it going higher than the clouds are usually at. Once the pressure is high enough, the magma erupts which could push through the volcano’s vent. What are the 4 types/differences of volcanoes? The 4 types of volcanoes are shield, cinder cone, composite (another word is stratovolcanoes and lava domes. I enjoyed doing this activity because I get to learn information about volcanoes by watching the videos and using our smart searching skills.
LI: Use your smart searching skills to find 3 interesting facts about the Tangiwai disaster.
For reading we learned about the Tangiwai disaster. We watched a video that explained the tangiwai railway bridge disaster. We made notes with vocab (words we don’t know) and questions to know. One of the things we learned about was open and close questions. Open questions are saying the answer but adding more details and closed questions is a simple yes or no. For our document, we read through the story and answered the questions using our own words/comment tool to share our opinions/ideas. Group 2 made a google video, we took turns sharing six facts about what happened in the past (Tragedy disaster). We used our smart searching skills and explained what happened in a short sentence in our own words. An example of this is “The disaster occurred on Christmas Eve, with many passengers travelling home to be with families, adding to the tragedy of the event”. We enjoyed learning about volcanoes.
LI: To retell an event in history through the fictional eyes of someone who was there.
For Reading and Writing we were learning about the Trenches in World War 1 creating our own diary entries and Imagining how or what would we do if we were in WW1. Creating ideas and learning new information about ANZAC was so fun to work on. We went onto this site that took us to all of the NZ soldiers diary’s and what they wrought thought the War. We used Google vids to help us record our own diary entries. I enjoyed using this as it allowed me to share my ideas with my classmates and teachers and helping me learn more about ANZAC, Something I found very interesting was that how our class got to discover the site we use to look on Hami Graces Diary and the other NZ soldiers. I realized that how tight the trenches were.
